His strengths have been in personnel scouting and as the director of basketball operations for the Mountain Brook program under McMillan. Loyalty, McMillian said, set him apart in his role at the Spartans.
"He'll do really well," McMillan said. 'There are a lot of things that everyone learns the first time they go from that assistant seat to the head coaching seat. But he's a smart guy who will learn very quickly. There's also a lot of things that can't be taught that Christian Schweers already has to him. Coaches play for you. Players know that you care about them and they'll go hard and practice hard for you even on days where they don't feel like giving a great effort. I can see every Puma Racer Shoes
McMillan took Schweers under his wing after his first season at Mountain Brook. He'd been a varsity assistant with him for the last five seasons.
They will offer five sports at their AHSAA inception: Basketball, Cross Country, Swimming, Track and Volleyball. The new schools will take Parkway Christian's slot in a Class 1A area with Jefferson Christian, Shades Mountain Christian and Westminster Oak Mountain. That campus will house grades 7 12.
The Eagles will compete in the AHSAA's Class 1A this fall. The school's colors will be mostly red with navy blue and white, Schweers said.
Schweers had been a key assistant on Spartans coach Bucky McMillan's staff for the last five seasons.
Mountain Brook assistant Christian Schweers named the first head varsity basketball coach at Cornerstone School
The younger Schweers had been working at the alternative school at Mountain Brook for the last few years. He will teach physical education at Cornerstone.
He officially accepted the job on Monday morning. Schweers had an informal interview last week and a formal one last Thursday. He thought about it over the weekend but termed it "an offer that he simply could not pass up" at Cornerstone.
He said Schweers posted a tweet on Twitter that said the goal of an assistant coach is to make sure the head coach remains as the head coach and he lived that every day during their five years together turning the Spartans into an Alabama high school basketball powerhouse.
seasons and he has 38 years of experience as a high school basketball coach in Alabama.
"The opportunity to start a program from scratch just doesn't happen a lot," he said. "I was very humbled that they would even consider me to do that. I feel like all of the experience I have had at Mountain Brook over the last few years that I am really going to be able to put that into play from the ground up. I can't say enough about Bucky (McMillan) and Mountain Brook basketball. This is a direct result of everything that's gone on other there and our relationship. He's a Puma All Black Trainers

The 29 year old said that parents will pay their tuition fees up front and that they would get those funds back when they pay their taxes. He said Cornestone has had a middle school team at its K 8 campus in the Woodlawn area. He hopes for a middle school team, a junior varsity team and a varsity program.

"It will resemble and be very similar to Mountain Brook basketball," he said. "It won't look identical because only Bucky (McMillan) Puma New York Shoes can make that what it is. Essentially the way I hope we play is aggressive full court defense and sound half court offense and a disruptive style. I actually honestly hope to play even faster on offense than what we have played over the year at Mountain Brook. I believe in transition offense and getting it out of the net and going and shooting a lot of 3 pointers."
Their uniforms won't be neon, but look for the program to look like Mountain Brook's back to back Class 6A state championship teams from its inception.
Schweers will be tasked with starting an entirely new basketball tradition. He said the campus will offer a unique opportunity due to Alabama Accountability Act.
McMillan said there wasn't an ounce of self promotion during the time he worked with Schweers at Mountain Brook.
Cornerstone is a new school that will open its doors on the campus of former Alabama High School Athletic Association member Parkway Christian Academy this fall.
Schweers has been a varsity assistant basketball coach for another four seasons at Trinity in Montgomery. Jack Schweers, his father, has been the head coach there for the last 20 Puma Shoes Grey And Green
