Deonte Burton's dunk versus UNLV: There are moments when I doubt Burton is an actual human. The 6 1 guard might not be able to leap tall buildings with a single bound, but he could probably leap an RV if need be. His one handed dunk off an alley oop from Marqueze Coleman versus UNLV was athleticism at its finest. It also was the final nail in the coffin as Nevada's snapped an eight game skid versus UNLV.
But the fact they still exist one third of the way through the MWC schedule is a miracle in itself.
San Diego State's Steve Fisher:The yoda of college hoops coaches, Fisher is chronically undervalued. He might not be Duke's Mike Krzyzewski or Michigan State's Tom Izzo, but he's one heck of a coach. He's taken an Azetc team that was 5 23 in his first season in 1999 2000 and made them a perennial Top 25 squad. In the offseason, he lost his top two scorers and three starters. The result: SDSU is 17 1.
The odds the Wolf Pack basketball team win the Mountain West title this season are slim.
Fresno State's Rodney Terry: The good news for MWC coaches is none of them are getting fired after the season. Carter entered the season with something to prove and his squad is doing just that. Terry's Bulldogs, meanwhile, are struggling for the third straight season. His tenure includes a 32 51 overall record and 9 27 league mark. It's only his third season, so he's safe, but progress is needed next year. Avila: The Navy transfer is third in the MWC in scoring (18.9), third in field goal percentage (51.0), fifth in assists (3.5) and ninth in rebounding (7.4). If the Rams were having a better season, he'd be in the thick of the MWC player of the year race. Honorable mention goes to San Jose State's Rashad Muhammad, who averages 15.6 ppg and is the clear cut leader for freshman of the year.

Well, you can put away those rsums. The Wolf Pack, which improved to 5 1 in MWC play with a double overtime win over Fresno State on Wednesday, is tied for second in the conference and Puma Shoes For Women Gold

the league's big surprise. After finishing last in the MWC last year, Nevada has loftier goals this season.
The award will likely go to the best player on the best team, which right now means Thames, who averages 16.9 ppg and plays great defense for No. 7 ranked SDSU.
In nonconference play, Nevada look like a team floundering toward another disastrous season. Fans were already looking at the rsums of coach David Carter's replacement next season.

Nevada Mike Perez drives past Wyoming Riley Grabau during a win at Lawlor Events Center earlier this year. (Tom Smedes/RGJ file)Nevada Wolf Pack: It bears repeating Nevada won three conference games last season and is already at five this year. The Wolf Pack also was 2 12 on the road in 2012 13 and is 6 2 on the road this year. The league is 10th in this year's RPI, its lowest mark since 2005 06. After getting a MWC best five teams to the NCAA Tournament last year, the conference will be lucky to get three this March.
"It's definitely more even this year," Cole Huff said. "Last year, you had San Diego State, UNLV, New Mexico, Colorado State at the top. But this year everybody is beating everyone. People are surprised to see us in the top two. It's just really balanced and I think it's going to be like that the rest of the season."
San Diego State's Xavier Thames: This will be an intriguing race, with three viable candidates in Thames, New Mexico's Cameron Bairstow and Nevada's Deonte Burton. All three would be great choices and seem like locks for the All MWC first team. Puma Shoes Light Purple
San Diego State 69, Boise State 66: The MWC hasn't seen many epic games in league play Nevada's double overtime win over Fresno State was pretty tense, though but the biggest game was the Aztecs' win over the Broncos, a clash of two high level clubs. Boise State trailed by 18 before pulling within one late in the game. But Derrick Marks missed a 17 foot jumper with 4 seconds left as SDSU sealed the win.
New Mexico's Alex Kirk: When talking about UNLV, the 7 foot center said: "UNLV overall, just looking at the raw talent they have on the scouting report, it's pretty scary. They're not really having the recent success coming into conference, but that's a hell of an AAU team." The AAU team comment got under UNLV's skin, which led to a 76 73 Rebels win at The Pit. Prior to the game, UNLV had been in a slumber. West: After out playing Wyoming's Larry Nance Jr., the son of the former NBA All Star, in a win earlier this month, West said: "I just looked at him like another player. Like practice. I didn't look at him as anything special. I don't even know who he is. I just attacked it like that." It's innocuous enough, but the quote perked up Nance's ears. The rematch between the two comes Saturday.
